Born in 1954 in Istanbul, graduated from the Department of the Mechanical Engineering of Gazi University.  Akın founded Akfen Holding in 1976 , a listed  diversified holding company, engaged in Airports Construction and Operations, Ports Operations, Energy, Construction, Water & Waste Water Utilities,  Fast Ferry Operations and Real Estate. Akın is the Chairman of Akfen Holding, TAV Airports and Mersin Port. In 2006, he founded Akfen REIT, which was listed in ISE in 2011, to develop 3-4 star city hotels with Accor Group. In 2005, together with TUV Sud AG and Doğuş, Akfen won the tender for motor vehicle inspection services and sold its stake in 2009. In 2005, Akfen established a JV with Kardan for Akfen Water. In 2011, Akfen won  İstanbul Fast Ferry privatisation in a consortium with Tepe, Sera and Sauter.
